fist thing you want to learn is the anotomy of this bear, where is the best hit, what is going to cause the most damage when its hit, If the bear is facing you what do you want to aim for, broadside shots ,,,,???? I did see a web site at one time but i cant find it, it was a 3-D veiw of animals from every angle and there most vonerable areas , once you have studied this you can look at your bear and know that the angle he is at and if I shoot here the bullet will go through this or these organs !
I hope you under stand what im trying to say. !!! Ive used a 270 to take a nice bear, He was slightly facing away and at 60 yds.. I put the crosshairs just behind his head and blow his neck out, he did drop right there.. To me that was the best shoot to drop him…I dont think i would go for any other shoot.
The round I used was a 165 gr,hp boat tail

You are correct that a key to being successful is proper ammo selection.
You want to stay away from 130 and 140 and other middleweight bullets. Think at least 150 grain, if not 160.
Another poster mentioned that these heavy bullets will be less accurate. That is nonsense. The accuracy will be totally independant of weight. Some guns like bullet type X some guns don't. The only difference is that the heavy bullet will be going slightly slower, so at further distances, say 300 yards, the 130 will be 6 inches low, while the 150 is 9 inches low
So pick up a box of 150 grain premium ammunition, and sight your rifle for it, and you are going to have a more than adequate firearm.
I'd suggest these two

If you have a very strict budget and cringe at paying $40 for 20 rounds,

If you reload, I would build a load based on H4831 behind a Nosler 160 gr. partition bullet. The 160 will likely be less accurate than a 130 gr bullet, but it will be plenty accurate for 100 yard black bear shots.
If you don't reload, you can find .270 loads with 150 gr Nosler partition bullets. I know that midwayUSA sells them. See here:

I would avoid boat tail bullets all together for black bear, as they have a bad reputation (which may be all hype, but why take the chance when you have good options).
Good luck!

Federal Vital-Shok 150gr Nosler Partition
Federal Power-Shok 150gr Softpoint
Corbon Hunter 130gr. DPX
Pretty much any .270 hunting load should be sufficient but these three stand out in my mind.
