What do Polar Bears Eat

Polar bears, native to the Arctic and its surrounding areas, are considered to be the largest carnivores on land. Read on for more information on what do polar bears eat…

Polar bears are the largest bears in the world and live in the Arctic region. Though they are related to the brown bear, many features of this animal have evolved for them to adapt to the harsh conditions of the Arctic. As polar bears spend most of their time in the sea, they are also considered as marine mammals and are otherwise known as ‘maritime bear’. These giant bears are the largest carnivores of the bear family. Polar bear adaptations enable them to move across the ice, land, and sea and hunt prey. Polar bears are excellent hunters and their white coat helps them to hide in snow while hunting. They can wait for hours to catch a prey and one of the polar bear myths is that they cover their noses in the snow while waiting.

What do Polar Bears Eat?

Polar bears adorn the position of top predators in the Arctic food chain. The staple and primary food of polar bears are seals. The polar bear population mainly feeds on ringed and bearded seals. Seals are plenty in the Arctic and they are hunted when they come out to rest on the ice, or when they surface through ice holes to breathe. Adult polar bears eat the seal’s skin and the fatty layer beneath the skin, which is known as blubber. The protein rich red meat is consumed by the younger bears and other animals like Arctic foxes, and ravens. The sub adults, who live separately from their mothers, also get sufficient nutrition from these carcasses. Even if these sub adults hunt and catch prey, they may not be able to defend the adult polar bears, who feed on the prey first and leave the half-eaten carcass for the sub adults. One of the interesting facts about polar bears is that they are so hygienic that they have the habit of washing themselves with water or snow after feeding.

Apart from seals, polar bears also prey on adult walruses and beluga whales. Polar bears can also live without food for several months. It has been observed that these animals fast for several months during the early autumn and late summer. During these times, the sea is not frozen, making it impossible for these bears to hunt seals. They fast during these months and live off the fat reserves in their body.

Polar bears also feed on many other wild food like rodents, shellfish, crabs, reindeer, muskox, birds, eggs, and even other polar bears. They are also found to eat plant material like berries, roots, and seaweeds. However, the major chunk of their food consists of fat and meat of marine mammals like seals, as they do not get sufficient amount of calories from terrestrial food. It is also seen that these animals can be scavengers and consume garbage if they enter places with human inhabitants. They can feed on anything dumped by humans, like car batteries, plastic, etc.

Hunting Habits of Polar Bears

The hunting area of polar bears are primarily the interface between air, water and ice. It is very rare to see a polar bear hunting for a seal on land or in open water. They adopt a method called ’still hunting’ to catch prey. They use their smelling talents to locate seals. These bears can smell the breath of seals and wait near ice holes where the seals surface to breathe. As the seal breathes out air, the polar bear smells it and uses its forepaw to reach into the hole and drag the seal out to the ice surface. Once the seal is taken out, the bear bites into the skull of the seal to kill it. Polar bears can also hunt seals resting on the ice. Upon seeing such seals, the polar bear walks to a spot about 100 yards away from the seals. Then they crouch another 40 feet towards the seal and attack the prey. Another hunting method is by attacking the birth layers made by the female seals in the snow. In case of whales, the same method is adopted by the polar bears. They swipe at the whales, when they surface at breathing holes. It is very rare for the polar bears to attack an adult walrus, which is very big in size. In case of land animals, polar bears, being heavy, cannot outrun the speedier animals. The same thing happens in case of many marine animals as well, as they can swim faster than the polar bears. This is one of the reasons why the diet of polar bears consists mainly of seals.

These fabulous animals are categorized as a ‘vulnerable’ species, as they may become endangered in the near future. Polar bear life cycle is affected by many factors, the most important among them being global warming. Global warming is affecting its habitat, by depleting the ice layers. Now that we know what do polar bears eat, we must restrict our activities to ensure them an uninterrupted food supply.

Decoy Your Buck Inot Bow Range
by: Art Wedge

The Wisconsin morning air was still and bit at my face as I made my way quietly to my stand. It was one of those mornings, so quiet, you feel as though every step you take is being heard by the game you are after. This was my third trip into this area and I have seen a few nice bucks on the other trips. They just seemed to never be in range of my Golden Eagle Evolution. This time was going to be different though, I had a new plan.

I eased into the area where my stand was placed and checked the wind again,”perfect”. Twenty yards up wind of my stand, I place my secret weapon. A full size doe decoy. I watched the tapes, read the articles and today I would get him as close as I needed. After placing some Tink’s #69 on the ground under my decoy, I quietly climbed into my stand some fifteen feet above the decoy. After waiting for what seemed to be an eternity, I gave a few soft grunts in different directions and eased my back up against the tree. I’m not really sure, but I don’t think I even got the call back into my pocket, when I heard a limb snap. I slowly turned my head and there he was. A tall racked nine pointer with good mass for the public land I was hunting. He was already inside my 30 yard comfort zone, but quartering toward me. I looked away long enough to get my release on the string. As I looked back to him, he started to move down wind of the decoy. Just as I had planned, when he stopped the second time to wind the decoy, he was 5 steps from my tree. The Muzzy broadhead hit its mark as he left the ground and bolted for cover. I gave a quick grunt with my mouth that stopped him in his tracks. He turned and looked back at the decoy, as wondering why she didn’t run too. Down he went right there, no more then twenty five yards from my stand.

Decoy Tips

Using a decoy can be a great way to get that buck of a life time to close the distance you need to seal the deal.

Scent Control

Use the same care in eliminating scent from your decoy, as you do yourself. I give my decoy a bath in my favorite scent eliminating spray every time, before taking it into the woods. Always handle your decoy with gloved hands, being sure not to contaminate it on the way to your stand. Store your decoy in a place that doesn’t allow it to be contaminated by odors around the house or in your truck.

Know The Wind

Never hunt your stand if the wind is not in your favor. Place the decoy up wind of your stand. A buck will almost always circle down wind of the decoy to check it out. If using a doe decoy, place it facing away from you. The buck will again, almost always approach a doe from behind. Just the opposite if using a buck decoy. Place a buck decoy facing you, another buck will greet him head on.

Using Scents

I believe you should use scents with a decoy. If it looks like a deer, it probably should smell like one too. What scent you use depends on the decoy, buck or doe? I never place the scent on the decoy directly, this is just my preference. I sometimes like to leave my decoy stashed in the brush over night. I have seen a decoy destroyed because it was attacked while left out over night. If they can’t smell it they can’t find it. Instead, the scent I use, is placed on the ground under the decoy, I have also hung the absorbent scent wicks from a decoy.

Distance

When placing the decoy, set it out no farther than your comfortable range. When the buck circles down wind, you should always end up with a shot closer than your maximum range.

If you have never used a decoy, I would recommend giving it a try. Combine the decoy with occasional soft grunts and you never know what might just appear. That monster buck that has been just out of range, may suddenly pay you a visit.

Brown bear (Ursus Arctos bearingianus) is the most famous beast for hunters. The middle size of the adult male is 2,7 meter. Its color varies from hazel to almost black. Usually the bears are active in the morning and in the evening. During the day they can be met lying on rocks, basking in the spring sun.

The brown bear hunting “on its lair” is conducted in winter. At this time the hide of the bear is the best. Usually huntsmen find lairs late in autumn, when the bear lies down in hibernation. Often the huntsman beforehand determines the size of bear by the size of the tracks near the lair. It is usually necessary to reach such place in the forest at first on a car, after that on a snowmobile or sledges, and the last 500-800 meters on foot. When hunters draw near the lair, the huntsman sends dogs, and they drive out the beast under the shot of the hunter. Alongside there is a huntsman with the charged carbine, insuring a hunter.

There is nothing especially difficult in brown bear hunting. Mainly is to be convinced, that it is actual a beast, and not man. It is not necessary to hurry; there always are enough minutes. You should aim leisurely.

One requirement for the successful brown bear hunting is to not beat from a distance further than 120m. It is better to not shoot further than 35m. After the shot, if the beast approaches, at once you should add new patrons. When you come up to the brought down beast, remember that even a small bear breaks in two the backbone of the elk. So wait about 5-10 minutes.

If the bear however went away after the shot, but there is probability of hit, than you can go to finish brown bear hunting following the huntsman and the dogs! While you will bustle about, the beast will step back and lie down, dead or living. If the bear is living, dogs will do the main work, not only searching for the bleeding tracks, but also really seeing the living bear. Don’t go in the nightly forest for brown bear hunting without reliable dogs! It is better to entrust to the huntsmen nightly walks on the forest with the injured bears. Or you can wait till the morning. But remember, the August nights are warm and bear, especially when the shoot is in bowels, disappears soon.

Popular Hunting Questions Answered

Hunting and fishing are growing in popularity all over the world. As new people enter these outdoor sports they often have questions about the right way to do things.

Hunting is an avid pastime enjoyed all over the world. Once it was used as a means of providing the family with fresh meat but has since become more of a sport than anything else. There are some groups that are vehemently opposed to hunting, stating cruelty to animals. In some parts of the world, overcrowding and a lack of food causes greater cruelty by starvation. Man has hunted since the beginnings of time and will continue to do so. Whether or not you are opposed to hunting, it remains an avid sport for many people that enjoy nature and the predatory skills honed by hunting. If you are a beginning hunter, or are interested in learning some of the general basics of the sport, this article will cover some of the particular when it comes to hunting.

What is the minimum age required to hunt?

The minimum age required in order to obtain a hunting permit varies according to state and what type of license is required. Many states allow juveniles the ability to hunt a few days out of a particular season if they are with a licensed adult. There are also states that allow juveniles beneath a certain age to fish without a license if they are with a licensed adult. But each state differs on their requirements and regulations. You must check with your individual state to determine what their age limits are and whether or not a hunter’s education class must be passed before obtaining a license.

Is there any type of clothing I need?

There are different types of clothing needed. It varies upon what type of game you are hunting. Take for example deer hunting. Deer hunting requires camouflage and an orange vest for protection. Why an orange vest? It is an alert color that lets other hunters know where you are at and lets you know where they are at, should you come into another hunter’s range. There are also colors that you should not wear during a certain season. In the aforementioned example of deer hunting it was stated that it is imperative to wear orange for safety purposes. Do not wear white when deer hunting. This is especially true of White Tail Deer. A hunter works with his eyesight as well as his hearing. If he or she spots white, it could cause them to fire in that direction. The result is injury to you should you be the white spot that has caught their eye.

Knowing what type of protective clothing to wear is just as important as knowing what not to wear. You must be familiar with your sport, no matter what sport it is. Safety is your first concern for yourself and anyone else that is around you. Accidents happen every hunting season due to negligence and someone not knowing what they are doing. Do not let this happen to you.

What are game seasons?

Game seasons are the weeks of a year that a certain animal is allowed to be hunted. Most game seasons have a limited number of kills that are allowed and this limit can also vary by type. Duck hunting is a sport in which you not only have to have the prowess to shoot and kill a duck, but you must also identify the duck before shooting. Game seasons have strict rules on bagging and tagging the animal so it is imperative to know your prey before you journey out into the field, marshland or woods.

What laws are associated with hunting?

There are numerous laws associated with hunting. The first is the requirement is a hunting license. Other laws include what time of year the season begins, when it ends and what the limitations on killing game are. Remember: it is important to know your state’s laws or the state laws in which you will be hunting. Failure to read the rules will not help you if you are caught by a Fish and Game officer.

Who sets these laws?

The Department of the Interior is the overall governing body in Washington that regulates all hunting, fishing and wild life conservation. The next level falls to each state. There is the U.S. Forestry Division, The U.S. Fish and Wildlife and the U.S. Game and Fish Commission.

Effects of Deer Population Changes in the U.S.

Deer population in the United States has varied widely over the last century, and has had both positive and negative repercussions on our lives. Learn more about how the growth of the deer population in urban areas affects us all.

The white tail deer (Odocoileus virginianus) is indigenous to the continental United States, southern Canada, Mexico, Central America, northern portions of South America, and some countries in Europe. In many of these countries, deer pose problems such as eating residential vegetation and causing car deer collisions on roadways. For this reason, deer population is often an issue of concern.

At the beginning of the 20th century, there were an estimated half million deer in the United States. By 1930, that number had dropped to approximately 300,000. At a certain point, the species was nearly eradicated all together by hunters. As the result of an outcry by hunters and other conservation groups, individual U.S. states began passing legislation to restrict hunting, particularly of does (female deer). Most of the laws put in place shortened the hunting seasons and reduced bag limits, or how many deer a hunter can kill at one time.

As a species, deer are known reproduce at a rapid pace. A doe grows fully mature in about two and a half years and then produces twins each year for the next 10 plus years. Therefore, one doe can create 20 offspring. In a relatively short period of time, the population growth of deer can be staggering, if left unchecked.

By the year 2005, the population of deer in the United States was estimated in excess of 30 million. In fact, the deer is the state animal of Arkansas, Illinois, Mississippi, New Hampshire, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Michigan, South Carolina and Wisconsin, as well as being listed as the “provincial animal” of Saskatchewan.

Not only is the population up, it also is up significantly in urban areas. Urban areas are highly restrictive of hunting, and as a result, deer have flourished there. Typically, land development increases the animals’ available food supply. Old forests do not produce much edible food for deer, usually because the tree branches are too high for deer to reach, and during the cold winter months, low shrubs are eaten very quickly. However, new urban areas with newly planted trees and shrubs can sustain a much higher population of deer. Some suburban areas in the U.S. have reported populations as high as 200 deer per square mile.

Deer in urban areas create a number of problems for humans. Gardeners often times find their gardens eradicated after a harsh winter. Deer will eat everything within reach, and they can reach 5 to 7 foot on their hind legs. Deer have been known to eat low hanging tree branches up to 7 foot from the ground. Deer also love acorns, fruits and field corn. Their stomach physiology allows them to eat some things that few other animals can eat, like mushrooms that are poisonous to humans and many other mammals. All of these factors make the deer a menace to urban gardeners as well as agricultural communities deriving their income from field crops.

Another major problem with deer population grown in urban areas is in incidence of car deer collisions. Deer on and around roadways are a serious danger. It has been estimated that deer are responsible for approximately 1.5 million automobile accidents each year in the United States, some of which prove to be deadly for the motorists involved.

The growth in deer population is not all bad, however. In the United States, deer are regularly hunted for sport, and an entire industry has developed around that pastime. Retail outlets specializing in sportsmen’s products have entire sections of their stores devoted to deer hunting paraphernalia. In fact, the whitetail deer is considered to be the most popular game in the United States, with approximately 11 million hunters chasing it each year.

But beyond that, some establishments provide you with a sense of history that is impossible to replicate in a chain hotel. For example, you may find a Tucson bed and breakfast that was originally built at the turn of the twentieth century. Renovated in a way that retains the history but provides guests with luxurious accommodations, such a Tucson bed and breakfast will provide you with a memorable stay.

A bed and breakfast is also the perfect “home base” from with to see the wide variety of Tucson area attractions. If you’d rather look to the skies, the Titan Missile Museum and the Pima Air and Space Museum aren’t to be missed.

If you’d rather embrace the outdoors (and beat the heat!), Colossal Cave Mountain Park makes the perfect excursion. You can take a tour of the 70-degree cave, enjoy the serenity of the butterfly garden, or saddle up for trail rides. Chances are, you’ll see mule deer, and if you’re lucky, you might encounter the park’s whitetail deer. While you’re in Tucson, you shouldn’t miss the Tucson Botanical Gardens, which consists of 16 specialty gardens with a range of botanical and gardening themes. And, bringing the outdoors in is Biosphere2, which is located about 25 miles from central Tucson. When you take a tour, you’ll experience the earth encapsulated in a little over three acres.

Few visitors to Tucson can resist the 4th Avenue District, a shopping and dining area with over 100 restaurants and shops. It’s the place to go for Tucson nightlife, and you can find everything from live music venues to quiet neighborhood bars. The District has street fairs in the spring and winter, merchant sidewalk sale events, bicycle swap meets, and a variety of other events that you won’t want to miss.

Rattling For Bucks- The Real Results

I have read numerous articles on the art of rattling for whitetail deer. “bang them horns as loud as you can” “just click the tines together” or “rattle every 5 minutes.” Sometimes you have to take the fact that magazines have to write something that sells.

In this article I want to shed real light on what has worked for me and also share some information about a study done by Dr.Mickey Hellickson.

This 3-year study was conducted on the 7,800-acre Welder Wildlife Foundation Refuge in south Texas.

In order to observe bucks when rattling, towers were scattered about the refuge. One person would rattle from the stand while the other person would observe from the towers.

The rattling sequence was long (3 minutes) and short (1 minute)loud and soft, during the pre-rut, rut and post-rut periods.

The results were this: 171 rattling sequences with 111 bucks responding. That is a 65% response rate. Pretty darn good. Just one problem though.

The guy on the ground only saw 33% of the bucks that responded. The reason is that all the other bucks circled and never came in far enough.

So how do we get them to bucks to come closer? The study sheds light on this also.

For example, he found that loud rattling brought in three times as many bucks as soft rattling. Early morning is best, peak rut is best, less wind is best, cool temperatures are best, and 75% or more cloud cover is best.

From my personal observation, I think that loud rattling does work better for one reason. You are reaching more deer. Also when it is calm, the sound will travel in all directions.

The length of time rattling does not seem to matter. Some bucks will come right away and others after several sequences of rattling.

The very best times to rattle are during the peak of the rut for younger bucks. For mature bucks, rattling has a few different rules.

One more thing that will help you succeed with rattling is a strategy that I use involving decoys.

I encourage you to read the whole article by Dr.Dave Samuel and find how you can use other strategies in conjuction with rattling to bag your next buck.

Humans have always feared wolves for years. Who can forget the big bad wolf in the Little Red Riding Hood! I am sure many of us must have hated them at some point after listening to such tales. Today, the Eastern timber wolf has more reasons to worry than humans. These are now an endangered subspecies of the Gray wolf. The Eastern timber wolf is found in the forested areas of the North America.

Facts about the Eastern Timber Wolf:

The Eastern timber wolf is also known as the gray wolf. These have silvery gray-brown backs with light tan on the undersides. The winter season sees these wolves grow a darker fur on the neck areas and the shoulders.

The length of the Eastern timber wolf generally varies from 150 cms to 180 cms. (This length includes the tail.) Their height varies from 65 cms to 85 cms. The male timber wolves are larger than the females. On an average, the Eastern timber wolf can weigh up to 45 kilograms.

The Eastern timber wolf is a social animal and these prefer to live in a family group or pack. A pack of timber wolves can have six to ten animals. This would include the breeding pairs and the pups at times. Here, the dominant pair is always in charge of the entire pack. These are the ones who select the areas to rest and the hunting grounds as well.

The Eastern timber wolves use various ways to communicate with each other. A variety of vocal sounds such as growling, and howling are used to indicate their behavior towards each other. These are also combined with various positions of the body such as flattening of the ears or having a stiff tail to even the hair on the back that can be erect or laid flat. All such patterns are used to communicate in various situations.

Eastern timber wolves do not always make regular use of shelters. Here, the den is constructed for the purpose of giving birth and raising pups. This den is generally used for a period of 2 months. Such dens are located on slopes, ridges and are always found near sources of water.

An Eastern timber wolf’s pack territory can cover 20-120 square miles. This itself shows that wolves require a lot of space.

There are times when neighboring wolf packs may share a common border. This would mean that various territories might overlap by more than a mile. In such cases a wolf that trespasses in another pack’s territory can face the risk of being killed by that pack. Therefore Eastern timber wolves use their urine to mark their territory. The manner any wolf howls is also a way to announce its territory to the other packs and is also a way to bring those wolves together who may have been lost from the pack.

The diet habits of the Eastern timber wolf include the deer and the elk and smaller animals such as the beavers or the rabbits. The prey for the Eastern timber wolf also depends upon the seasons. The summertime sees them hunting for beavers and the winter season sees them hunting down White-tailed deer and the Caribou.
